#18 - FIRST PLACE

old diary -
between two blank pages
a pink ribbon
-- Cezar-Florin Ciobîca
Votes:85**** Points:18
Comments 1:It's the blankness of the pages that makes this interesting.
Comments 2: Nice image. I read it as either the ribbon was all the entry that was needed, perhaps belonging to a romantic interest or perhaps simply a bookmark with no current entry but in either case I enjoy both interps.

#14 SECOND PLACE

old oak tree
a yellow ribbon
from a different war
--BILL KENNEY
Votes:611*** Points:11
Comments:A sad commentary in so few words.

#22 THIRD PLACE

8
ribbons
floating on the breeze
Buddhist prayers
--aye John McDonald
Votes:62**** Points:10
Comment 1:Line 3 merely explains lines 1-2, but the arrangement adds some effectiveness.
Comment 2:Nice pivot line and good implied association to Buddhist prayer ribbons.

5
silk rain--
i tie ribbons
on my memoirs
--Alegria
Votes:3***** Points:03
Comments:"silk rain" makes this interesting, but "memoirs" introduces a note of pretension

6

blowing freely in her hair ...
a red ribbon
--Keith A. SIMMONDS T & T
Votes:3***** Points:03

7

9
a kite stuck
in the tree, it's ribbons
caught in the wind
Bouwe
Votes:12**** Points:05
Comment 1:The misplaced apostrophe removes this one from consideration. No points.
Comment 2:I like the implied that the kite/ribbons are still trying to fly/escape

10
clouds
torn to ribbons -
spring rain
--Juhani Tikkanen
Votes:5***** Points:05
Comments:There's a mismatch between lines 1-2 and line 3; the violence of "torn" doesn't sound like spring rain.

11
receding waves...
through the half-opened door
a ribbon of light
--Cara Holman
Votes:42**** Points:08
Comments:A "headline haiku" and effective as such. How effective it will be when it loses its topicality is another question.

12
sky clears up --
in the haberdasher's window
a rainbow ribbon
--Jacek Margolak; POLAND
Votes:21**** Points:04
Comments:

13
love letters...
the ribbon less faded
than her memory
--Diane Mayr
Votes:71**** Points:09
Comments:Nice turn on "faded." The objection conventionally raised to metaphor in haiku doesn't apply here, because both meanings of the word are common in current usage.

and my birthday
--Patricia Lidia

  1. Nineteen persons sent in a haiku; however only eighteen were listed, the nineteenth haiku, was received after the list had been circulated and voting had already started.
Of the eighteen players, one person did not send in a vote (after 3 reminders had been sent); so, a guest voter was invited - Michael Baribeau an avid CKK member, responded by sending in a ballot, Thank you Michael

    Thanks everyone for another successful

  2. The comment attached to #12 ("sky clears up") apparently is meant to go with #13 ("love letters"), since it's in #13 that the "turn on `faded'" is found.
