Dear haiku friends
Kukai No 39 was the last for this year 2012. We rest in November and December.
I have been prompted several times over this year for a Poets Choice Kukai; so what i will do is collect the first 100 winners from when our kukai started and prepare a list for Poets Choice; however, this kukai will happen in 2013 .
We will begin the year 2013 with a Poets Choice Kukai; after which, we will continue with our monthly themes
Remember in December/January The Twelve Days Of Christmas' at Lunch Break i welcome your participation; and will remind you later again this year about it
much love
gillena cox
Founder/co-ordinator Caribbean Kigo Kukai
The Kukai - a haiku contest, where each person submits a haiku, and then, becomes a judge. When all the poems are compiled in a list, the contestants comment, vote, and give scores to poems of their choice. One cannot comment on, nor vote for one’s own poem. At the end of the voting process winners emerge, the selection based on votes by the kukai’s contestants.

--BILL KENNEY, USA
Votes:553*** Points: 24
Comments :An enjoyable read; the best words in the best order, that also translates visually with L2 acting as the platform. The tension builds as we view the image set up here: a high diver at the edge of the platform about to attempt what s/he has trained many hours for. And then we are left with just that one word, “stillness”. The diver? The crowd? Me? Yes, to all three!

stripping away
her gold medal
the alarm clock
--Patty Hardin
Votes:6*3*** Points: 15
Comments :This senryu stuck me straight away; powerful and yet humbling. My first readings of it were of an Olympian who had won a medal, but that this is stripped away at the sound of the alarm clock as the athlete has to rise every morning, just like everyone else, and go to work, or to study. A medal doesn't count in the everyday world. Or maybe it's just that the athlete had to get up and train for the next event. Again, the medal doesn't matter. The focus and the training, and the repetition of this with it's grueling early morning starts, is what is needed to win in the future. I gave it my top points because of this. It wasn't until later
readings that I realised the senryu could also (and maybe more likely) be about a person (maybe an athlete and maybe not) having won a medal in a dream, only to have it disappear when brought back to their waking reality. In reading the senryu this way, I still enjoy it, as it is well constructed. Dream ku can be very effective as dreams and their symbols lend themselves to be explored through poetry.

--Ralf Bröker, Germany
Votes:1***** Points: 01
Comments: Great use of language; especially, “a referee eats his words”. The addition of the ellipsis gave me that extra pause, and I could imagine the last few seconds ticking over before the event ended and the result was confirmed. The use of “we” is interesting: it could have been a team sport, but more likely the “we” that we all use when “our” team or country have won. Simple yet effective.

--BILL KENNEY
Votes: 531*** Points: 14
Notes: I haven't had saltfish since I was a kid; for us, it was Depression food, consistent with what you said about its history in your part of the world – a poor people's food that the rich have caught on to

Comment 2: This one evokes ancestral memories in such a succinct way.

wet laundry freezes

--Pat Geyer
Votes: 4*1*** Points: 07
Comment 1: I would have given this one more than one point, except for two things—"freezing" rather than "freezes" would have made it an immediate observation rather than a statement, and "on the clothes line in winter" is a little verbose; maybe "on the winter clothesline". (I understand the poet chose 5-7-5 and my suggestions disrupt that pattern.) That said, I do love the juxtaposition of slabs of stiff laundry and slabs of salt fish.
Comment 2:I visualize a nice comparison of fish being hung to dry to the laundry on the line.

The Kigo is salted fish
Send one haiku which includes salted fish e-mail to
Example:-
hibiscus hedges -
the popping sound of frying
saltfish accras
-- gillena cox
(in Trinidad and Tobago we use the term 'saltfish' in conversations; salted cod [salt fish] was once considered the poor man's dish, having had a history of being food for slaves; not so now, its pricey and available in all the supermarkets, an all time favorite for a variety of recipes; accras and buljol are two very popular ones). Saltfish is even more popular in the Lenten Season.

first date -
we lie listening
for her footsteps
--john McDonald
Votes: 32**** Points: 07
Comment 1: I'm giving this a point for its intended meaning, but it desperately needs a "her" in line 1. Without it, you have a couple being naughty on their first date (!) and fearing that Mama is going to catch them.
Comment 2: This would read more smoothly if the word "awake" was inserted after "lie".
